Good to know, thanks for breaking it down for this non-aviator jong!

I will say though, even back in steerage the rows felt much larger with more footroom and I liked the bigger windows that you don't have to lean down to see out of on the Maxes. I'm sure it's all airline dependent on how they build out the interiors, but that was my takeaway. I hope they get all the shit sorted on them because from a passenger standpoint they seem pretty nice but then outside of the old MD-80 stabilizer thing I can't ever recall letting doubt creep into my head when I see what kind of plane I'm boarding.

Skymiles program's new weight on segments flown. He'll be platinum by the time he hits Montana.

Only way to make the frequent flyer miles work (shrug). I fully expect the house of cards to collapse at Dulles. At least we're traveling carry on so we shouldn't lose those (crossed fingers).

What the fuck is with TSA agents in Alaska? Last time I left anchorage I watched them pat down an 80 year old lady. Milk run that stopped in Ketchikan for a mechanical, they went through every single passenger bag. Leaving Juneau today, I thought I was going to have to completely disassemble my ski boot. They were worried about the hottronics. Then the tech fittings. Then the boot board. In that time they also opened up every single passengers bag. No terrorists are getting through in AK.

It's pretty common for the smaller airports to have way worse security theater zealots.

Rhinelander is close to the unfortunate meth capital of Wisconsin....Merrill.

Merrill is a little 'ol logging town with a lot of rich history, and where my parents, grandparents, and their parents before them are from, but unfortunately, like so many little towns like Merrill, the economy went to shambles after the logging industry went tits up and the mills there shut down, so the next best thing for people to make money in old dairy barns is to start cooking meth.

relative to the number of passengers it sees, LaGuardia is easily the worst airport in the US. Sure there's some shittier airport in someplace called like Rusted Incest, KY but there's no comparison with LaGuardia for an airport that masquerades as a real airport.

Even with the remodel, it’s horrendous. I’m surprised more planes don’t go off the end of the runway into the drink with that short distance. They have to buzz the buildings in Jackson Heights and then slam the brakes to stop in time.

KLGA is unquestionably awful in so many ways, but it's actually pretty fun from the pointy end. Both runways are 7000' which isn't terribly short for a medium jet (under 300k lbs). It's just that there’s so much traffic that they have to use SIRO (simultaneous intersecting runway operations) to prevent backups. So under blue sky/light wind, they want departures off rwy 4 and landings on 31. And when you land on 31, ATC wants you off the runway before the intersection with rwy 4/22 making it much shorter.

Second scenario (usually for wind/weather) is landing runway 4/22 (either way), and launching off 13. And it’s usually bumpy/turbulent. As for buzzing Jackson Heights, the ground there is higher than the airport, so the approach angle is steeper than normal (which is 3.0°). That can lead to a firmer touchdown because the timing is a little quicker. As for the braking, if you’re rolling to the end, you can save the brakes, but if you’re exiting at taxiway Q you’ve got to get on 'em.

On a nice day, the visual approach for 31 is amazing. Down the East River, past Central Park and the Empire State, turn left at Williamsburg, aim at Shea Stadium, then carve a tight left onto short final and land.

IAD was a little tight but made all the connections. Got lucky, if any flight was delayed 30 minutes or more and it would have been game over. In any event I do not recommend this itinerary.

First time flying through DEN in about twelve years and I remember why I hate it, hiking from one end of A to the other end of B truly sucks and the 3 minute train ride between seems like some kind of joke they're playing on travelers.

This is why this place is awesome. Where else can you get cool commercial flight info like this alongside a monkey fighting thread, baseball chatter and some of the best mountain sports enthusiasts around?

    Thanks for sharing TS.

TBH, pretty low. The thing with all three NY airports is taxiing to/from the gate. LGA is tight, and only works when everyone is moving. JFK is huge, there are international flights (language barrier), and ATC talks fast. Everyone who goes there with any regularity has heard some things on the radio. And EWR is a shitshow on the ground due to the tight parallel runways. I actually heard a ground controller have a meltdown on the radio there.

Why is LaGuardia so shitty? The old one seemed really old and run down to me and taking buses back and forth was a pain, I get that. The new one didn't seem to get rid of the problem of long walks - is that why you people mostly hate airports? What else is a requirement - big bathrooms with lots of stalls, plenty of eating choices that don't have lines, security lines that are not always long - basically you all don't want to wait for any reason or walk longer than 5 minutes?

What I like about it are the views flying are incredible as Ted mentioned, and it's a short taxi to manhattan. It's better than taking a train to JFK, or a taxi to JFK. I usually use JFk so I'm no LaGurdia expert.

Being able to get there easily. And if it's a decent sized urban area, being able to get there easily on clean safe public transportation. FRA has some suck, because it's so huge. And good luck finding a decent place to take a shit. But the fact that the high speed train station is there makes up for a lot of it's failings. LGA could learn a thing or two.

What's the best flight plant to get into Worcester, MA?
In bygone daze, I used to fly into Providence and get a car to get to Marlborough and all that was taken are of by the company. So I suspect it was cheapest.

Because despite literally everyone yelling it for years they still won't connect LGA to train service.

I like SLC, it's easy to move around in, has good food options and the remodel is nice. Denver needs a people mover like Detroit on it's ridiculously long concourses. Having security in a large well lit open space instead of what looks like a greyhound station is nice to take the anxiety level down.

Hardly an expert or frequent flyer but I’d guess Logan is your best bet these days considering the number of Alaska Air flights from SeaTac. Off the top of my head I don’t think I’ve flown another airline to WA/OR since they set up shop here.

Holy shit, that's amazing and I didn't know that. It's not like the airport is out in boondocks somewhere.
