This Playlist Is Hot Enough To Melt Your Headphones

Music is an essential part of life here at TGR—we’ll be the first to admit that we have different tracks to get us into the zone, and tracks that we reserve solely for days with copious amounts of fresh pow. Music, just like a photo or a smell, is a powerful tool that can transport you to another place entirely. At the end of the day, if you’re gonna drop Corbet’s Couloir, you’ve gotta have the right song for the job.

With that being said, let us introduce you to Soundcheck: weekly curated playlists from your friends at TGR. Come explore our film soundtracks and athlete interviews, and stick around for the new soundtrack to your weekly adventures.

TGR Editor Justin Fann—editor on such projects as Further, Higher and the upcoming Andy Irons Documentary— weighed in on his thoughts about music, TGR films and action sports.

On storytelling: “The right song can really make or break your story. You’re not gonna have Lil Wayne rambling about money and women if you’re telling a heartfelt story about the love for skiing and powder. You really aim to compliment your story by finding the same vibe musically.”

On music & action sports: “Music creates anthems to certain types of activities… floaty, slow-paced beats get you amped for pow days, hip hop can give you that rhythm in the park, and high energy rock gets people fired up as they point it down long, spiny faces up in Alaska. I think especially with action sports, people feed off the feeling they get by listening to whatever music it is that gets them going.”

On finding the right song: “To me, [finding the right song] is a huge part of the edit process because it gives you an initial rhythm to follow, and in many instances a song serves as a starting point. Something as simple as swapping out the music of a segment can completely change it and create a whole different tone and takeaway. Once you find the right song, you get this sense of excitement as you bring the scene you imagine when you listen to the music to life.”
