The animated version of big wave surfer Bianca Valenti in The Atlantic’s Frontiers of Sports is candid about the many obstacles females encounter within the sport.

As she explains, you need to be tenacious to be a female surfer. For one, it’s sure as hell not easy to make a living. Valenti found throughout her career that actual athleticism was undervalued in the eyes of sponsors. Their mindset was more focused on capitalizing off of sex appeal. Sexism of this nature is rather unique to the female side of the sport. However, Valenti—who has been competing since she was nine years old‚ has remained undeterred. Watch as she hopes to make bigger changes within the sport with initiatives like the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing.
